The Climate

The Bay of Kotor including Tivat generally enjoys mild winters and hot summers, with sea temperatures ranging from 10-12C in winter to a beautiful 25-28C in summer.

Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter, the Montenegro coast has much variety to offer.

For the summer visitor Montenegro's coast has many faces: from the serene beauty of the Kotor Fjord, to the hustle and bustle of Budva Riviera, or to the tranquillity of the massive lake Skadar. Even on the hottest days, you can escape to the mountains in just a few minutes and experience a drop in temperature of perhaps 10 deg C, so however hot the day, you can always escape to a cooler more refreshing altitude as well as a complete change of scenery.

In May, the climate supports a profusion of alpine mountain flowers. while in October, the forests  in the National Parks turn a wonderful variety of reds, oranges and yellows.

During the winter, the worst weather tends to accumulate mostly over the coastal mountain ranges, but this frequently leads to warm and sunny winter days. The contrast of the mild winter weather with a backdrop of snow-capped mountains is delightful. In fact, one of the greatest assets of the Bay of Kotor and adjacent mountains is the variety of its climate. For the winter visitor, most of the coast is your own private playground.  The busiest coastal area in winter months is Kotor, the UNESCO protected town, just a few minutes from our apartment. This ancient city attracts tourists from Dubrovnik by both cruise ship and coach.  Kotor is also popular with the locals during the off-season as it maintains an endless appetite for festivals.

When Is The Best Time to Visit?

So, when is the best time to visit the Bay of Kotor? Of course, this depends on your own preferences but our personal choice, having spent over five years exploring this beautiful country, particularly for the first-time visitor would be the months of June or September. The temperatures are more comfortable for Northern European visitors than in the height of the summer, there is little rainfall, and because it is outside the peak holiday months of July and August, the tourist numbers are lower making exploring easy. This enables not only the Bay of Kotor to be enjoyed at its stunning best, but the adjacent mountains also. For those who want to enjoy the amazing array of alpine flowers, perhaps May is the best time. For glorious Autumn foliage, think about October when the a drive across the mountain to Cetinje, the ancient capital is a must.
